Izvorišta 363: Adam Semijalac + Vrelo zvuka

In this edition of Izvorišta I continue presenting great albums from the Croatian world music scene by exclusively playing few songs from the album "Ode dite" by Adam Semijalac. I also played new single from Nemanja, and announced concerts that will take place in the coming weeks and months as part of the program Vrelo zvuka in Zagreb.

Adam Semijalac - Ode dite (Selfreleased 2023.)

Adam Semijalac, who used to perform under the name Bebe na vole, has been present in the Croatian music scene for years and lately has been moving more and more away from the blues and towards traditional influences. Three years ago he recorded the great album "Tanac za crnega vraga," in which he focused mainly on traditional Croatian singing, and a few months ago he released the album "Moje srce se reskoli" with Dunja Knebl.

Now Semijalac has released the album "Ode dite" with 10 own songs, created under the influence of traditional music. Everything was played on the dangubica, bulgarija and banjo, and from the lyrics and singing style it is hard to tell that they are not ancient, old songs after all. But that is not as important as the fact that this is a fantastic album. "Ode dite" is for the most part somber, sometimes heavy, sometimes a little playful, but generally interesting enough to make it breathless to listen to.

"Ode dite" is the best example of how to use tradition and refine it so that everything sounds quite modern. Semijelac has perfectly integrated the blues and drone into the whole story, and it is quite easy to conclude that it will be difficult to get a better album from these region in 2023. In the announcement of the album he said it was an attempt to reappropriate folklore, and I can only correct him and say that this is not an attempt at all, but the establishment of a new tradition, and in the best possible way.
