Lakiko - What To Do, How To Live? (Selfreleased 2023.)
The album "What To Do, How To Live?" was released by the Bosnian musician Lakiko, i.e. Lana Kostić. Lakiko presented herself on this album with only her voice, a cello and a loop. The album itself is, as Lakiko herself says, an artistic vision that comes from a time of deep contemplation, looking back, thinking about the contemporary experience in the Balkans, growing up in Sarajevo and the scars and difficulties that the city and the people had to endure, and thinking about how her future will develop.
Lakiko uses a vocal technique similar to sevdah, Bosnian folk music, and the themes in her songs are social, political and engaging. She is not afraid to talk about difficult issues, accompanied by a minimalist but brilliantly performed background. The album grows with each new listen, I can not get it out of the player these days...
Lankum - False Lankum (Rough Trade 2023)
With their first two albums, Lankum have established themselves as one of the more interesting new Irish folk artists, and with "False Lankum" they have only confirmed that. The most beautiful thing about them is that they do not devote themselves to that part of Irish heritage that has to do with parties and lots of alcohol, but create mystical, somewhat droning soundscapes.
From the first song, the wonderful and somewhat dark "Go Dig My Grave", Lankum show how folk music can be combined with modern production. "Go Dig My Grave" is better known as "Butcher's Boy" and it's a song that has seen many versions, but no one has created such an atmosphere as Lankum, precisely because of the drone sound that perfectly matches the words. After this great album opener, Lankum continued in the same style until the end, recording one of the best albums of the year.
