Izvorišta 365: Pjev, K.Downes & H.Chisholm; K.Kalhor & T.Diabate; PoiL Ueda

In this edition of Izvorišta I have presented three albums - "Medna Roso" recorded by Pjev, Kit Downes and Hayden Chisholm; "The Sky Is The Same Color Everywhere" by Kayhan Kalhor and Toumani Diabate and "PoiL Ueda" by the band of the same name, which will soon give a concert in Zagreb. In addition to those artists, we also listened to Damir Imamović, Lakiko, Adam Semijalac and the collaboration of Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer and Shahzad Ismaily.

Pjev, Kit Downes & Hayden Chisholm - Medna Roso (Red Hook Records 2023.)

Zagreb's a cappella quintet Pjev, English organist Kit Downes and New Zealand saxophonist Hayden Chisholm had a joint concert at the Cologne Jazzweek in 2021., performing traditional songs from Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina with ambient, slightly droning accompaniment. Now that concert has been released by Red Hook Records, and this album is further proof of how beautifully new things can be inserted into traditional heritage.

PoiL Ueda - PoiL Ueda (Dur Et Doux 2023.)

PoiL Ueda is a project of the French band PoiL and Japanese musician Junko Ueda. Their first collaboration was inspired by the Japanese medieval epic Heike-Monogatari. The choice of theme is not surprising, as Junko Ueda is an outstanding exponent of Japanese storytelling, and in collaboration with French musicians, medieval themes are given a modern setting. Junko's satsuma bivi, a traditional instrument first mentioned in Japan in the 8th century, contrasts with PoiL's somewhat wild musical background, and her voice creates a mystical atmosphere through certain chants somewhat reminiscent of throat singing. PoiL Ueda are coming to Zagreb on May 24. The concert will take place at KSET and will be organized jointly by ZEZ and Vrelo zvuka.

Kayhan Kalhor & Toumani Diabate - The Sky Is The Same Colour Everywhere (Real World 2023.)

We have been waiting for a long time for a joint album of two musical virtuosos from Iran and Mali, and now it is finally here. Kayhan Kalhor and Toumani Diabate first collaborated about 10 years ago, they gave some concerts together, and now their joint studio album is finally out. "The Sky Is The Same Colour Everywhere" is based on recordings Kalhor and Diabate made back in 2016., and the result is fantastic, as expected. It's hard to find fault with this album, you just have to fully engage with it. Besides the album, you can do that at the concert on November 6th at the Zagreb Jazz Festival.
